NURTW represents the interest and welfare of registered taxi drivers – NURTW officials
NURTW ways are not transparent, they exploit us and are not accountable – Taxi drivers
While commercial drivers continue to lament constant harassment and exploitation by different factions on the Nigerian roads in uniforms and off-uniforms, ranging from the police, VIO, so- called union marshals or Agberos, the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has insisted that the Union exists to protect the interest of its members and are committed to doing so.
Speaking on Dorocorruption radio program hosted by Ezenwa Nwagwu on Wazobia FM, in Abuja, the Managing Director, NURTW mass transit FCT, Prince Dauda Abdulkadin and Assistant Secretary of NURTW, FCT council, Junaid Abubakar, both emphasized the role of NURTW, also known as The Union, to include representing the interest of registered commercial drivers, protecting them against unlawful exploitation and assisting members through its organised corporative.
Abdulkadin, the Managing Director, added that only defaulting members of the union, who failed to commit to their responsibility of annually purchasing the compulsory stickers and renewing their membership cards, as well as buying the daily tickets, are harassed by different interest groups, of which the union is not obligated to interfere, otherwise its members are always assisted in times of trouble, when they reach out to the union.
Speaking on accountability as it regards monies generated from the sale of tickets, the union officials explained that the daily sale of tickets is a way of generating revenue for the Union’s operation and the money generated is used for the benefit of its members. According to the managing director, through the funds generated, NURTW operates corporative that gives soft loans to its members when in need, similarly, the union at the headquarter implements projects, one of such, is the construction of NURTW hotel in Kogi state.
However, members who phoned in during the program, criticised the union for misleading the public on air, stating that no such benefits as propagated by the officials exist. They criticized the officials for wasting huge resources generated daily from tickets on building a ludicrous hotel, which they emphasized benefit only the officials.
Ezenwa Nwagwu, therefore, encouraged members of NURTW to engage its officials in regular meeting to discuss and agree on issues of welfare, accountability with revenues generated and implementation of projects which reflect the demands of its members. He stressed that only when members show genuine commitment, participate and question the operations of the union, will it serve them better.
