Mrs. Gladys Edunbola of health reform foundation of Nigeria enjoined citizens to oversee the implementation of health projects in Nigeria, according to the measure of resources committed for the execution of such project, while speaking on Say No Campaign’ DoroCorruption radio program on wazobia FM.
She decried the level of absenteeism in the public health centers. According to her, most of the doctors/ health workers focus on their already established private hospitals to support themselves due to the little or no financial support that comes from the public health centers. Hence, underprivileged citizens find it difficult to access adequate health care.
BudgIT has made it simple for citizens to track projects concerning health, and others sectors through an initiative called TrackaNG, according to their representative, Mr. Henry Omokhaye. He maintained that Nigerians can search for health and other projects for their community, through the 2018 budget on the TrackaNG website, to ascertain the amount allotted for different projects and subsequently follow up implementation of those projects.
Mr. Henry stated that ignorance of the people is the greatest asset of the government and not their access to resources. He pointed out that, citizens’ monitoring of the health budget, enables them to inspect closely the movement of public funds, identification of funds breakdown, as well as cases of mismanagement and corruption within the budget implementation sequence.
In harmony to what he said, Mrs. Gladys added that the involvement of pertinent authorities in the fight against corruption in the health sector is not enough, hence, urged citizens to direct the job that is done through monitoring; being that they suffer the result of poor management/corruption in the health sector.
