Corruption in the civil service is undoubtedly the worst form of corruption that has permeated all societal fabrics, giving room to ineffective service delivery and weak institutional structures, cumbersome administrative procedure, negative attitude of the civil servants to work and individuals’ insatiable appetite for wealth at all cost.
Speaking to DoroCorruption crew on Wazobia FM, the president of Trade Union Congress, Comrade Bobboi Bala Kaigama blamed politicians for the high level of corruption in the civil service sector, he said that the government do not provide sufficient services to match the increasing population in the country.
He added that the anticorruption effort will be fruitless if the framework for fighting corruption is not changed, that is, providing the ordinary citizens access to better living like health care, free quality education, good renumeration etc.
Conceding to what he said, Comrade Victorson Agbenson, former chairman, the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria chapel of National Union of Journalists also added that, despite the failure of the government, public servants need to cooperate and unanimously reject the act of corruption in their various ministries, especially those that depend on its proceeds as a means of livelihood, asides their monthly renumeration.
Comrade kaigama urged listeners to question, friends, colleagues, relatives and well-wishers who live extravagantly and clearly above their earnings, instead of choosing to remain silent and benefitting from their loot.
He emphasized the commitment of the Trade union congress in empowering their members, through skill acquisition and exhorted public servants to be part of it.
As a core message to listeners, Comrade Kaigama advised public servants to disassociate themselves from all forms of corruption, he enjoined that every public servant should have an alternative source of income, to augment their monthly renumeration from the civil service.
