Prominent activist, Mr. Jaye Gaskia exhorted citizens on wazobia FM, to always complain, if they notice any form of misconduct in the health sector, while speaking on Say No Campaign Dorocorruption radio program. He faulted citizens inability to sufficiently report cases of corruption and mismanagement, to evoke action from the relevant authorities.
He said that complaint is free, consequently, citizens should weight on the report channels like Servicom, consumer protection council, police force, human right commission, public complaints commission to relate problems they experience within the sector.
In accordance to what he said, Dr. Henry Ewunonu of Nigerian Medical Association opined that though the government is expected to commit to the funding of the sector, without proper oversight from the citizens, the desired improvement will not be witnessed in the health sector. He also said that Nigeria does not have hospitals, if judged with the international requirement, pointing out the poor facilities in the public health centers.
Responding to the comment that the complaint channels are not functional, Mr. Jaye stated that one citizen does not make a crowd, adding that the government will be forced to act when there are multiple complaints from citizens on a particular issue. He also encouraged citizens to organize and act, when the complaint channels do not work.
Dr. Henry emphasized on the need for citizens to arm themselves with the patients’ bill of right, which will enable them to make the right demands from the health sector.
